Monsters HD has passed away

News - Television

We've been hearing rumblings about this one for awhile but the news didn't become official until this weekend. Monsters HD, the horror genre's longest running provider of HD content will cease operations later this month.

Last year, HD channels owned by VOOM were issued a near-fatal blow when Dish Network chose to stop carrying them on it's service. Crippled but not dead, Monsters HD lived on for the past several months delivering content online a la FEARnet, but unfortunately could not survive on the internet alone.

The following message appeared on the Monsters HD website this weekend:

MONSTERS HD - BORN: OCTOBER 2003 - DIED: JANUARY 2009
"TV's first and longest-running hi-def horror and creature feature channel will cease operations and mad experiments this month. Thanks for all the screams and support over the years. Fear not - monsters never die...they always come back! Pleasant dreams fiends."

Head over there while you still can, and catch films like HALLOWEEN, THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, STRANGELAND, and JEEPERS CREEPERS for free on your PC.

Months later, I still mourn the loss of MonstersHD...how about organizing a grass-roots effort to revive the monster?

I LOVED MonstersHD.....LOVED IT. I have been extremely depressed about it since the day I turned the channel on and was shocked it wasn't on. Now all I have is Chiller but they just don't show enough Horror or even have a wide variety. I am so fucking pissed off about it. Is there nothing out there similiar that will be put on tv? Anything? :-(

Damn that sucks! I loved MonstersHD. It was really the main reason why I turned on my TV. When I become a millionaire, I will try my best to get it back online.

    MonstersHD...down...but not out....

Ok. So, how hard would it be to feature 5-10 minutes of commercials, for upcoming movies and DVD's mostly, between each flick to make sponsor dough to keep the channel running. They could even actually try to work for a living and give you some behind the scenes featurettes on upcoming theater releases for yet some more sponsorship, ie LIONSGATE and The Weinstein Company.

LAZY-LAZY-CARELESS-THIEVES as they remove channels, also known as services, yes services SCUMBUGS, with the billing rate staying the same.

Cablevision is total garbage. Always has been and always will be. I'm glad I have Dish Network. If you loose some services for even just a day or two they credit your bill big time. Wow its like there in touch with humanity or something, and grateful to their subscribers for lining their pockets. What a notion.

Here is Cablevision's business model. Over charge 200% and F the customer.

What a damn shame for horror!!! I heard so much of this channel. Unfortunately I couldn't get the channel where I live. I looked over it online and I liked what I saw!! I really enjoyed watching the Gruesome Twosome comic strips too. I hope there will be a resurrection of this channel or something like it. Subscribers need to take a stand, and demand the cable and satellite companies get what we asked for!

I was an early subscriber of Voom when they were actually a direct competitor to DirecTV and DishNetwork. When DishNetwork pulled the plug on Voom it was a woefully sad day in my life. I got spoiled watching MonstersHD each day when I came home from work. Our only hopes are is that someone opens up another all horror HD movie channel and purchases the Monsters HD library so we can enjoy these films again. You have to remember horror fans are not in the mainstream, so we will always get the dribble and leftovers. The almighty dollar will determine when and if we get another all horror HD station. My guess is that it will be a half-ass Chiller type channel with commercials or some such half-hearted attempt.

(I just wrote Dish Network this email)

I am a Dish Network subscriber, my wife and I are displeased with Dish Networks choice to stop Voom HD on Dish. Especially Monsters HD which was a very unique HD channel. Dish currently has Chiller, the so called NBC Horror channel. This channel has the same programs on every day. Chiller has commercials and every program is edited keeping all the good things about Horror away from the viewers. I am also dis-pleased about some High Def channels, for example SCI-Fi channel says its HD and its not. Those black bars on side of the screen clearly shows its not in High Def especially the quality. Some of those so called High Def channels look like VHS ! Please just bring back Monsters HD or a good HORROR movie channel in HD. Not Chiller.

Cablevision SUCKS! They also removed this great channel from their pathetic lineup. Monsters HD was the only place to see classic horror movies, new and old, and the assholes shut it down. Chiller sucks. SciFi usually sucks. Cablevision SUCKS!

In 2008, Dish Network removed ten of the channels from their lineup on May 12, 2008, with the remaining five removed the next day (wikipedia)

Im pissed and sending emails to all of them. I am making complaints to everyone. It is Dish, Rainbow and Cablevision's fault. The Digital age is here, hopefully another Horror HD channel will soon come. TVs are cheaper and more people want quality. I heard FANGORIA might start a channel, does anyone know ?

I hear all of you. I cried when I found Monsters and KungFu hd gone.

But my cable bill does not go down after losing these channels!!!!

All providers don't care about their subscribers no matter what their marketing bull professes.

Fios is a lot more expansive then cablevision. I looked into getting it since I lost Voom. But for what I have currently with cable vision $120 a month for tv, phone, internet. Fios wants $152 a month. Na, it's not worth it. If they had MonsterHD or something very close, then I'd think about it. But since they don't, there is no reason to switch.

The reason MonstersHD and all of the other VoomHD channels went away is because Cablevision didn't want to allow a la carte channels from the package, they wanted Dish to carry all 15 channels when there were only MAYBE 5 channels' worth of content.

    Blame Rainbow/Cablevision, not Dish.

I am soooooooooooooooooooooooo pissed off! I looked forward to watching Monsters HD after returning from work!!!! I am an avid horror fan and I wouldn't mind paying a little extra a month as well for the channel!! I wish that they would find away to bring it back! I purchased an HD box with dvr just for the channel!! I am heart broken!!

(This Is What I told Dish Network)

Hello. I have been a Dish subscriber for about 2 years now. I am a proud Dish Network subscriber. I chose Dish Network over Direct TV for your Voom Hd Channels. I am a big Horror film fan and Direct TV offers chiller Hd which is a horrible channel compared to Monsters HD that Dish Network had not too long ago. I think it was a big mistake taking those Voom channels away. I know it is nice to have more channels added in HD from Dish Network, but only if those Voom HD channels were still available. Please bring them back! Whichever company offers those channels next in my area or channels that are more closely comparable than what Dish Network currently offers, I will change my service to that company. Thank you.

Everyone here should really do 2 things:

    1. write Dish an email--or call them if you are a subscriber--and tell them that you are pissed that they ditched VOOM (and MonstersHD). in fact, if you are willing, cancel your service with Dish and tell them it's because VOOM/Monsters is gone...

    2. write DirectTV and let them know that channels like VOOM & MonstersHD would make their air more attractive.

We can only talk with our dollars...it's the best way to get what we all want!

Oh Man Monsters HD was the only great channel on cablevision. I was so bum'd out when my boyfriend went to fios. I am so upset that fios doesn't not carry a channel that only shows horror movies and interviews! Where are the politicans when u need them (lol). Seriously i have him checking weekly to see if fios will carry a channel like that, Boy o Boy im sure he could tell you how i went on and on about losing my Monsters HD channel.

I'm so heartbroken that this channel is not available anymore.
Guess more people would rather watch reality tv than horror.
    such a shame.
Wish there was some way we could get it back...

MonstersHD was on digital cable. What rock have you been under? ;) Lol.

The idiots at Cablevision who owned Voom/ MonstersHD, Animania, and other cool Voom channels shut them off tonight at 1am Eastern.

For MosntersHD, I was watching Child's Play this am/late evening, and at about 1:15am the screen went blank right in the middle of the film. WTF?

What inconsiderate jerk offs Cablevision is.

What ever happened to the your choice and the a la carte supposed features of Cablevision/IO?

I would gladly pay a few extra bucks a month for Monsters HD. It was the best channel I have ever had.

Uncut, commercial free. Horror and Sci Fi in HD. HD specials and behind the scenes. What more could you ask for?

Now Cablevsision is shoving crap in it's place. No thank you.

I am going to cancel Cablevision. They don't give a damn about their subscribers.
