Director reveals more SILVER CORD threads

This past summer, Fango put the bloody bug in your ear about an upcoming dark fantasy/thriller called SILVER CORD, the directorial debut of Colombian-born writer/director James Ordonez which is currently preparing to go before the cameras.

The cross-genre opus is based on Ordonez’s true experiences with his brother, a diabetic whose clockwork lapses into deep, cyclical comas produced eerie first-hand accounts of, if not life after death per se, a completely parallel postmortem existence.

“For 15 years, my brother lived in the hospital’s critical care unit more than he lived at home,” the filmmaker tells us of his family’s unreal ordeal. “During this time, he had at least 10 clinical deaths, but every time doctors were approaching us to give the bad news, suddenly—10 or 15 minutes later—he’d wake up. I began interviewing him about what he was seeing over there, and it was no tunnel or anything books claim that people see. His experience was much more real, a happier life guided by a supernatural love for a woman. While he was in the coma, he could never determine if she was real, but every time he lapsed back, she was always there.”

This true-life TWILIGHT ZONE predicament (with echoes of the classic Charles Beaumont-penned ZONE episode “Perchance to Dream”) formed the basis of SILVER CORD, co-written and produced by veteran genre-film figure Ken Gord (STUCK, TV’s HIGHLANDER). Ordonez, a passionate cineaste with a leaning toward classic Hollywood cinema, is aiming to make this picture a one-of-a-kind experience; part metaphysical horror show, part pulse-pounding action film and part dark romance as it journeys into one man’s shattering existence hovering between life and death. “The film is clearly marked by three major American film influences: FLATLINERS, the romance of GHOST and, surprisingly, BASIC INSTINCT,” Ordonez notes. “But horror fans will absolutely see a major connection to both Kubrick’s THE SHINING and the original THE OMEN.”

SILVER CORD is currently in preproduction, with a confirmed cast that includes Val (THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU) Kilmer, Eric (THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE) Balfour, Cam (TWILIGHT) Gigandet and Ving (DAWN OF THE DEAD) Rhames. The movie will be shot in New Zealand in early 2009; for more information, visit the new official website and keep logging on here for more updates.
