Producers’ update on NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET remake

Fearful Features - NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET

With the FRIDAY THE 13TH remake heading into theaters on Friday, February 13, courtesy of Platinum Dunes and New Line/Paramount, producers Brad Fuller and Andrew Form revealed to Fango that their long-gestating A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET reboot is just a couple of months away from filming.

nightmareremakeprodsnews“We’ve got the script, and in 12 weeks our goal is to be shooting in Chicago,” Fuller tells us.

Whereas FRIDAY THE 13th is a distillation of the first four original movies into one, the producers note that their NIGHTMARE will take the franchise back to its roots. “It’s kind of what we did with TEXAS CHAINSAW, bringing it back to the first one,” says Fuller. “It will definitely focus on the original film, unlike the new FRIDAY THE 13TH, which [pulls] from a bunch of the movies.”

While the producers admit they’re “close on directors,” the ultimate helmer has to be someone who can provide the kind of strong imagery that distinguished Wes Craven’s 1984 trendsetter. “We’re looking for a really visual filmmaker who can make those dreams crazy,” says Fuller. “Someone really visual.” And while there have been plenty of rumors on the web for months regarding who will play Freddy Krueger, one actor who is definitely not on the list, despite previous reports, is Billy Bob Thornton. “That was never brought up with us,” Form states. Fuller adds that Robert Englund has already expressed interest in not reprising the role: “He doesn’t want to do it.”

The dilemma right now is whether to cast a name or an unknown as the iconic villain, and the producers are leaning toward the latter. “There are amazing actors out there who we would love to have in the role,” Fuller says. “I don’t think you want someone in the part where people can’t see Freddy. You have to have somebody who is so good that they can become Freddy, or someone nobody’s heard of who can really pull off that character.”

But what if Englund were to come back and say he wants to do it after all? Would they entertain the idea? “It’s a discussion we’ve had,’ Fuller reveals. “We’d have to talk further about it.”

Looks like they are gonna remake a whole lot more horror classics now-a-days, especially 'Hellraiser' in 2011. Damn them to hell.

It;s a remake! A remake to bring it up to date for a new movie watcher!

Robert was good in ANOES 1+ 2 then the rest turned Freddy in to a camp queen! He was funny , he was not ment to be funny!
So I am up for a new Freddy K, one that will be a mean twisted up son of a bixch!

I'm not so concerned with who will play freddy as much as I am about who will direct this film. NOES really is different from any of the other slasher series from the 80's and that is the result of Wes Cravens abilities as a director*. If I were Platinum Dunes I would be pushing for Guillermo Del Toro. I think he showed with Pan's Labyrinth that he has what it takes to create a truly creepy dream world.

*granted, John Carpenter was equally talented, but only in his ability to create suspense through what is off screen. Craven created something equally frightening, but it was a completely visual reality rather than an emotional one.

I know that this remake will be great. It's been a long time coming and bay will be the man on this one as all he is on all his films. As for Englund he made his mark as the original freddy but just like Mike had to pass the torch to Kobe and Lebron, Rob gotta do the same. And besides if they find someone to play the role just as good as Englung, you're gonna say you don't like the movie just because it ain't him. Sometimes change is good.

Its a piss poor remake of Nightmare if they don't have Robert playing the part. They'll need to man up and tell him they were assholes not to ask him in the first place. I know many people who will boycott the film if he isn't Freddy. It doesn't make sense not to have automatically went. "let's ask." From what I've read in interviews with him, Robert loved this part and has jumped at every chance to play it.

Let's hope they get their heads on straight.

even though robert englund chose not to reprise the role that made him a household name (total buzzkill for fans worldwide) doesn't mean that he can't have a role/cameo in the redux as a angry townsperson that lynch freddy and burn him alive or have him play freddy's father like alice cooper did in ANOES 6 freddy's dead thats if they go way back when freddy was a child...

If Englund is not playing Freddy, this film will fail miserably. Fuller and Form never had Englund in mind when they got the wild hair to go ahead with this. Englund likely felt disrespected by not being asked, therefore these tools can claim he doesn't want to do it. How about the way they skate around a clear answer when asked what if he DID want to do it? I refuse to believe Englund won't do it. Until I see an interview with him that has a definitive statement, I will believe he was snubbed and he is WAY above begging these fools for the role that is and always will be his. ENGLUND AS FREDDY pretty simple. I just don't get it. Why alienate the fans? The PD fanboys are in the VAST MINORITY on this one PD, trust me. Or ignore the advice that you ask for and make a movie no one wants to see (except for the 2 dozen or so fanboys on your blog posts who blindly accept anything you give them). ENGLUND. CALL HIM. MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE.

people need to chill! Bay may be a doushe, but the texas chainsaw remake was incredible! the cinematography was brilliant! Marcus Nispel understands how to capture horror nd he knows how devoted we the fans are. I'm a huge fan of Freddy! I know the producers won't fuck this film up. they know how to choose directors. and ya it sucks that Englund wont play Freddy, but he's getting old and Freddy needs to be a youngish child molester. a remake needs to occur in order to make up for the last few in the franchise. new nightmare? come on!

Suh-weet! Platinum Dunes gang-rapes yet another horror classic. Wow. Is it possible for Michael Bay to be any bigger a douchebag than he is already? I'm talking six-foot-plus, man-sized douchebag. The biggest. HUGE! Somebody should stomp on him.

He probably doesnt want to do it out of respect to Wes Craven.

I am excited about the fact that its finally comming into production! However I think Robert Englund should pull his head out of his a** and take back Freddy. He is the real Freddy and no one could ever replace him!! If he isnt Freddy I know its going to be hard to really enjoy the movie! Im am a die hard fan of Freddy and Hope i wont be disappointed!!!

Anybody else getting tired of the remakes? I'm going to go see the new Friday just for shits and grins, bit I don't know that I'd want to see anybody but Robert Englund as Freddy. Just doesn't work for me. The first movies were so good, why remake them?
