Variety reports that J-horror specialist Hideo (RINGU) Nakata (pictured) has signed on to direct the psychological thriller CHATROOM for Britain’s Ruby Films and Film4. The movie is set to roll next spring in the UK.
Scripted by Enda Walsh based on his stage play, CHATROOM centers on six teens who communicate from their separate rooms via cyberspace, and wind up playing a “game” that involves manipulation and destructive, violent acts. Alison (SHAUN OF THE DEAD) Owen, Paul (DUST DEVIL) Trijbits and Laura Hastings-Smith are producing, with WestEnd Films handling distribution sales. “Nakata has come up with something very visual, very conceptual, and situated somewhere between DISTURBIA and CUBE,” WestEnd’s Eve Schoukroun tells the trade. This will be the first original English-language feature for Nakata, who previously helmed the American RING TWO and has been attached to several other U.S. projects, including a remake of THE ENTITY.
