Adrien (KING KONG) Brody, star of horror master Dario Argento’s next film GIALLO, recently spoke to two film publications, Moving Pictures Magazine and Independent Film Quarterly, about the movie. The Oscar-winning actor (for THE PIANIST) stars in the film, which lensed in Italy earlier this year, with Emmanuelle (THE NINTH GATE) Seigner and Elsa (SNAKES ON A PLANE) Pataky.

Brody also takes a producer credit on GIALLO and reportedly had a heavy hand in all aspects of the project, from casting to rewriting to marketing. He tells IFQ #16 about his role and GIALLO’s plot: “I play [Detective] Enzo Avolfi, a man who saw his mother murdered at a very young age. His desire for vengeance materialized into an obsession with hunting down pattern killers and delivering justice. The story begins amidst an ongoing investigation of repeated slayings of beautiful young women.”
One beautiful young woman/potential victim in GIALLO is Pataky, Brody’s real-life squeeze. The actress, who plays Seigner’s sister in the film, actually served as the catalyst for Brody’s involvement with it. “The role of Celine, a fashion model who is abducted, was first offered to my girlfriend,” Brody tells IFQ. “It’s a very challenging role as the character is put through terrible torture. My initial interest to come on board creatively stemmed from a sincere desire to make sure she was safe. What’s interesting is that by playing the detective in the film, the motivation of my character is also to protect her from harm. That being said, it was also a chance to work with the legendary master of Italian horror films. He’s one of the greatest.”
Brody’s kind words about Argento don’t stop there. “I have seen quite a few of Dario’s film’s,” he continues. “He creates such a uniquely terrifying world, even before any bloodshed. His films are like strange paintings.”
A fan of Argento’s flicks since he was a Queens, New York teenager (DEEP RED is a particular favorite), Brody gives the horror maestro glowing praise in Moving Pictures’ fall edition, noting, “He’s amazing. He’s probably the most generous director I’ve worked with. He’s really collaborative and open to ideas and has a wonderful enthusiasm for all this grim shit. Somehow it doesn’t even feel grim when you’re working with him there.”
