Combichrist: TODAY WE ARE ALL DEMONS (Musick Review)

Andy LaPlegua brings us another gem of brutal and punishing synth beats in the new Combichrist release TODAY WE ARE ALL DEMONS. After the highly successful release of the single “Get Your Body Beat” and their 2007 double-disc set WHAT THE F*** IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?, Combichrist cements themselves as one of the new masters of Industrial rock with their latest release.The aggro-tech act begins 2009 with a whirlwind tour promoting the new album, along with taking on former Imperative Reaction drummer Trevor Friedrich.

TODAY WE ARE ALL DEMONS opens with the track “No Afterparty”, a recorded series of sound bytes of what I’m sure was a promoter's worst day getting arrested. If you can’t laugh at the situation, you’re taking yourself too seriously. “All Pain is Gone” kicks the teeth in on what promises to be a truly pulse-pounding industrial album. Andy’s passion for his work bleeds through like a chainsaw artery rip in this killer track. “Kickstart the Fight” is a stomping rivethead dance track brimming with adrenaline and red hot burning synth.

The band continues to brim with bitter and brutal tracks like “Spit” and “I Want Your Blood”. The title track “Today We Are All Demons” slows down the album compared to the fast-paced previous riffs. However, its lilting acidic lyrics, combined with torturous synth riffs create a sadistically beautiful soundscape. “At The End Of It All” closes out the album with a triumphant black track of brilliant sound and inspirational lyrics.

 

Combichrist’s mainstream commercial breakout proves to be a boon and huge benefit for the dark rock scene. Finally, someone can start driving nails into the coffin of the (sic) Emo driven alternative scene and bring dark rock something beautiful and brutal in equal measure. And there is no doubt that Andy’s writings and Combichrist’s ripping sound certainly prove to be masterworks with each new release.

    I can't belive you're arguing about how to label their sound, who cares? Why is it so important? What bothers me, eventhought I like theis sound, what are they saying? Did any of you read their lyrics? Their violent, stupid an full of hatred of women. I've been listening to "this kind of music". indstrial etc. since it's beginning and I'm amazed how shallow it has become.

    The album is just as danceable as Body Beat and WTF. And Combichrist is aggro-tech. Yeah, EBM too. But not Emo.

    Adrian are you one of those fucking winey Emo assholes? I bet you are. Maybe that’s why you can’t see that the Emo movement is a pussy version rip off of the Goth movement, so I guess that would make you fucking idiot. As for the whole Combichrist being EBM or “Techno Body Music” (by the way it’s Electronic Body Music); I do have to say that there first album had a slight EBM sound but to me and most people it was a more Industrial then it was EBM. This second album has no sound of EBM in it at all! There is no way that it would be classified as such, and they have never have been. If you go to Combichrist’s Myspace they are listed as “Electro / Industrial/ Metal”, Wiki has them as Electro-Industrial”, Raves.com has them listed as “Dark Electro Industrial”, do you really need me to keep listing…. Adrian perhaps next time you could go head and kill yourself before you decide to indulge everyone with your stupidity. I think most of the readers would really appreciate that.

    Adrian, your an idiot. Combichrist is EBM ? gimme a fucking break. Go listen to some REAL ebm like Mentallo and the fixer, Electro Assassin, Din_Fiv, Klinik, Lassigue Bendthaus, Terror Punk Syndicate ect. real EBM has FUNK and groove to it, not some plodding wannabe-trance shit. Perhaps if you spent more time with the music over putting on your eyeliner and fake-hair you might realise that. Also, If your going to be an elitist prick scenester to the original reviewer - at least be an elitist prick scenester that knows what they are talking about.

    You don't know shit about Industrial. Combichrist is NOT Industrial "rock" and has nothing to do with "dark rock." There is no guitar anywhere. You didn't even mention EBM, which is what they actually are. And lately after his second album, Andy LaPlegua's Combichrist is more classified under Techno Body Music. Also, are you saying that the industrial goth scene is "emo driven?" Emos are nothing like goths in appearance nor in music. ESPECIALLY in music. You are one fucking idiot if that is what you're saying. Stop talking about shit you don't know. Actually, you get one point for mentioning that they're music is aggro-tech. Your review was shitty though.
