VAMPIRE GIRL VS. FRANKENSTEIN GIRL and BLOOD: THE LAST VAMPIRE (Film Reviews)

VAMPGIRLVSFRANK-BLOODTHUMBVAMPIRE GIRL VS. FRANKENSTEIN GIRL is exactly what you’d expect from a teaming of the directors (Yoshihiro Nishimura and Naoyuki Tomomatsu) who gave us TOKYO GORE POLICE and STACY: a supergory collision between schoolgirls and the undead that represents the zenith of extreme Japanese splatter satire. And it has arrived at the New York Asian Film Festival just in time to show up BLOOD: THE LAST VAMPIRE, which opens July 10 and represents a nadir in English-language adaptations of Far East fright fare.

BLOOD: THE LAST VAMPIRE (2009) (Film Review)

bloodreviewThe original short 2000 anime from director Hiroyuki Kitakubo was a force of nature, a short story that didn't quite elaborate on the title character Saya, the vampire hunter who was also of the vampire breed. What the 2009 adaptation attempts to do is elaborate on main heroine Saya and her exploits as a demon hunter for the government. Does the risk work to the benefit of this live action installment? Well yes and no.

What you'll see here is about only a quarter of the original's story followed by a completely different version of what we see in the animated original that extrapolates on Saya's journey in to the post WWII civilization where she's assigned to infiltrate a prep school where vampires of all kinds are hiding and feeding.

SURVEILLANCE (Film Review)

SURVEILLANCEREVTHUMBCalling up comparisons with her celebrated father David may be too easy a jumping-off point in addressing Jennifer Lynch’s new film SURVEILLANCE, but it’s an unavoidable one—especially given that David is credited as an executive producer. FARMHOUSE (Film Review)

farmhouse100What could ever be more horrific than the loss of one’s child?  That question lies at the very heart of FARMHOUSE, a clever, twisting and intense entry in the ever-expansive genre of horror.  The film is actually branded as a psychological thriller, and while it does work well in that context, at its core it’s a horror movie through and through.

MOON (Film Review)

MOONWhen it comes to cinema, it is often difficult to distinguish between Science-Fiction and Horror.  Films like ALIEN, INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, JOHN CARPENTER’S THE THING, THE TERMINATOR and even 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY often manage to mingle on both sides of the fence.  Perhaps the reason why lines are so easily blurred when discussing these two genres lies in the fact that both Sci-Fi and Horror are the two categories of film that most often deal with the “fantastic”.
